Whole-Body MRI

Whole-Body MRI?

Whole-body MRI is the process of scanning the entire body with a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device. This procedure is used to obtain detailed images of organs, tissues, bones, and other structures. Whole-body MRI can be performed for various purposes, such as cancer screening, evaluating unexplained symptoms, and monitoring known diseases.

Why is Whole-Body MRI Performed?

Whole-body MRI may be performed in the following situations:

Cancer Screening: It can be done for cancer screening in individuals at risk of cancer or with suspected cancer. Whole-body MRI can assist in the early detection of many cancer types, such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer.

Evaluation of Unexplained Symptoms: It can be used to evaluate unexplained symptoms like pain of unknown origin, fatigue, or weight loss.

Monitoring Known Diseases: It can be performed to monitor the progression of known diseases such as cancer, heart disease, or multiple sclerosis (MS), or to assess their response to treatment.

What Diseases are Diagnosed with Whole-Body MRI?

Whole-body MRI can be used to diagnose many diseases in different parts of the body. Some examples include:

Cancer: Such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, liver cancer, kidney cancer, brain tumors.

Cardiovascular Diseases: Such as vascular occlusions, aneurysms, myocardial diseases.

Neurological Diseases: Such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, stroke.

Musculoskeletal System Diseases: Such as arthritis, bone fractures, spinal problems.

Digestive System Diseases: Such as inflammatory bowel diseases, liver diseases, pancreatic diseases.

Other Diseases: Such as kidney diseases, infections, multiple sclerosis (MS).

How is Whole-Body MRI Performed?

During a whole-body MRI scan, the patient lies on a table and is moved into the tunnel-shaped section of the MRI machine. Loud noises may occur during the scan, so the patient is provided with headphones or earplugs. The patient must remain still during the scan. The procedure duration varies depending on the area to be scanned and the desired images.

Whole-Body MRI Scan Preparation

Things to note before a Whole-Body MRI scan:

Remove Metal Objects: You need to remove metal items such as jewelry, watches, belts, and clothing with metal zippers.

Wear Comfortable Clothes: It's recommended to wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothes.

Fasting: For some MRI scans, you may need to arrive fasting. Your doctor will inform you about this.

Medications: You may need to temporarily stop using certain medications. Consult your doctor.

Pregnancy: If you are pregnant or suspect you might be, inform your doctor.

Claustrophobia: If you have claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces), inform your doctor. A sedative may be given if necessary.

What are the Risks of Whole-Body MRI?

Whole-body MRI is generally a safe procedure, but it does carry some risks:

Contrast Agent Allergy: Rarely, allergic reactions may develop to the contrast agent administered intravenously.

Kidney Problems: The contrast agent can affect kidney function. This risk is higher in individuals with kidney disease.

Claustrophobia: The MRI scan can be uncomfortable for individuals with claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces).

Whole-Body MRI Prices

Whole-Body MRI prices can vary based on the area to be scanned, the equipment used, whether contrast material is administered, and other factors.
