Medical Interests

Orthopedics and Traumatology is a surgical medical specialty that examines and treats injuries and diseases related to the musculoskeletal system. This system consists of bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Orthopedics and Traumatology specialists (orthopedic surgeons) are trained in both surgical and non-surgical treatment methods for disorders in this system.

Diseases primarily addressed by Orthopedics and Traumatology:

  • Fractures: Fractures that may occur in any bone (e.g., arm, leg, spinal fractures).
  • Dislocations: Displacement of bones from their normal joint position (e.g., shoulder dislocation, hip dislocation).
  • Sprains and Strains: Damage to ligaments or muscles supporting the joints.
  • Sports Injuries: Injuries occurring during sports activities such as meniscal tears, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, shoulder dislocations, muscle tears, and tendon ruptures.
  • Spinal Traumas: Spinal fractures, spinal cord injuries.

  • Osteoarthritis: Wearing and degeneration of joint cartilage.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints.
  • Gout: Joint inflammation caused by uric acid accumulation.
  • Infectious Arthritis: Infection in the joints.

  • Lumbar Disc Herniation: Rupture of the disc between the vertebrae.
  • Cervical Disc Herniation: Rupture of the disc between the cervical vertebrae.
  • Scoliosis: Spinal curvature.
  • Kyphosis: Excessive outward curvature of the spine.
  • Spinal Canal Stenosis: Condition causing pressure on the spinal cord.

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Nerve compression in the hand.
  • Hallux Valgus: Bony protrusion at the base of the big toe.
  • Trigger Finger: Restricted movement in the finger.
  • Flatfoot.

  • Congenital Hip Dislocation (CHD).
  • Developmental Hip Dysplasia.
  • Clubfoot.
  • Childhood bone infections.

  • Bone tumors (e.g., osteosarcoma, Ewing’s sarcoma).
  • Soft tissue tumors.

  • Osteoporosis.
  • Tennis Elbow and other tendinitis disorders.

Orthopedic Surgical Applications

Orthopedic and Traumatology surgical applications cover a wide range of procedures. They include both the correction of injuries resulting from trauma and the treatment of various orthopedic diseases.

Orthopedic surgical applications:

  • Fracture Fixation:
  • Plate and Screw Fixation: Stabilization of fractured bone fragments using plates and screws.
  • Intramedullary Nail (IMN) Fixation: Fixation performed by placing a nail into the bone marrow canal in long bone fractures (e.g., femur, tibia).
  • External Fixator Application: Stabilization of bone fragments from outside the body using rods, in open fractures or situations with a high risk of infection.
  • Joint Dislocation Reduction and Stabilization: Surgical procedures performed to reposition and stabilize a dislocated joint.
  • Pelvic and Acetabular Fracture Surgery: Treatment of fractures of the pelvic bone and the hip joint socket (acetabulum).

  • Hip Replacement: Replacement of the hip joint with an artificial joint in cases of severe cartilage damage (such as osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis).
  • Knee Replacement: Replacement of the knee joint with an artificial joint in cases of cartilage damage.
  • Shoulder Replacement: Performed in shoulder osteoarthritis or severe fractures.

  • Knee Arthroscopy: A minimally invasive surgical procedure (performed through small incisions) for diagnosing and treating knee joint problems (e.g., meniscus tear, anterior cruciate ligament tear).
  • Shoulder Arthroscopy: Arthroscopic surgeries for diagnosing and treating shoulder joint problems (e.g., labrum tear, tendon tears).
  • Other Arthroscopic Procedures: Arthroscopic procedures can also be performed on other joints such as the ankle and hip.

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery: Relieving nerve compression in the wrist.
  • Trigger Finger Surgery: Surgery performed for finger locking issues.

  • Discectomy: Removal of the disc (intervertebral cushion) in the treatment of lumbar or cervical hernia.
  • Laminoplasty: Enlargement of the spinal canal in cases of spinal stenosis.
  • Vertebroplasty/Kyphoplasty: Treatment of spinal fractures.
  • Fusion Surgery: Stabilization of vertebrae to each other (e.g., in scoliosis or spondylolisthesis treatment).

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction
    Meniscus Repair/Resection
    Rotator Cuff Repair
    Shoulder Dislocation Stabilization

  • Removal of bone and soft tissue tumors.

  • Treatment of bone infections.
  • Treatment of joint degeneration (osteoarthritis), e.g., osteotomy (bone-cutting surgeries) in earlier stages before joint replacement.
  • Tendon transfers and tendon repairs.
