Medical Interests

Orthopedics and Traumatology is a surgical medical branch that studies and treats injuries and diseases related to the musculoskeletal system. This system consists of bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves. Orthopedics and Traumatology specialists (orthopedists) are experts in treating problems within this system through both surgical and non-surgical methods.

The main areas of interest in Orthopedics and Traumatology include:

  • Fractures: Fractures that can occur in any bone (e.g., arm, leg, or spinal fractures).
  • Dislocations: Separation of bones in the joints from their normal position (e.g., shoulder dislocation, hip dislocation).
  • Sprains and Strains: Damage to the ligaments or muscles that support the joints.
  • Sports Injuries: Injuries that occur during sports activities such as meniscus tears, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, shoulder dislocation, muscle tears, and tendon ruptures.
  • Spinal Traumas: Spinal fractures and spinal cord injuries.

  • Osteoarthritis (Calcification): Wearing and degeneration of joint cartilage.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in the joints.
  • Gout: Inflammation in the joints caused by the accumulation of uric acid.
  • Infectious Arthritis: Infection occurring in the joints.

  • Lumbar Hernia (Disc Herniation): Rupture of the disc between the vertebrae.
  • Cervical Hernia: Rupture of the disc between the cervical vertebrae.
  • Scoliosis: Curvature of the spine.
  • Kyphosis: Excessive curvature of the spine (hunchback).
  • Spinal Canal Stenosis: Condition that causes compression of the spinal cord.

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Nerve compression in the hand.
  • Hallux Valgus: Bunion deformity of the big toe.
  • Trigger Finger: Limited movement in the finger.
  • Flatfoot.

  • Congenital Hip Dislocation (CHD).
  • Developmental Hip Dysplasia.
  • Clubfoot.
  • Childhood Bone Infections.

  • Bone Tumors (Osteosarcoma, Ewing’s sarcoma, etc.)
  • Soft Tissue Tumors

  • Osteoporosis (Bone loss).
  • Tennis Elbow and other tendinitis conditions.

Orthopedic Surgical Procedures

The surgical procedures performed in the field of Orthopedics and Traumatology cover a wide range. These include both the correction of injuries resulting from trauma and the treatment of various orthopedic diseases.

Orthopedic surgical procedures:

  • Fracture Fixation:
    • Plate and Screw Fixation: Fixation of fractured bone fragments using plates and screws.
    • Intramedullary Nail (IMN) Fixation: Fixation performed by inserting a nail into the bone marrow canal in long bone fractures (femur, tibia, etc.).
    • External Fixator Application: Stabilization of bone fragments externally with rods in open fractures or cases with a high risk of infection.
  • Joint Dislocation Reduction and Stabilization: Surgical procedures to reposition and stabilize dislocated joints.
  • Pelvis and Acetabulum Fracture Surgery: Treatment of fractures of the hip bone (pelvis) and the socket of the hip joint (acetabulum).

  • Hip Replacement: Replacement of the hip joint with an artificial joint in cases of severe cartilage damage (such as osteoarthritis or avascular necrosis).
  • Knee Replacement: Replacement of the knee joint with an artificial joint in cases where the knee cartilage is damaged.
  • Shoulder Replacement: Performed in cases of shoulder osteoarthritis or severe fractures.

  • Knee Arthroscopy: Minimally invasive surgery (performed through small incisions) for the diagnosis and treatment of problems inside the knee joint (such as meniscus tears or anterior cruciate ligament tears).
  • Shoulder Arthroscopy: Arthroscopic surgeries for the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder joint problems (such as labral or tendon tears).
  • Other Arthroscopic Procedures: Arthroscopic procedures can also be applied to other joints such as the ankle or hip.

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery: Relieving nerve compression in the wrist.
  • Trigger Finger Surgery: Surgery performed for finger locking problems.
  • Hallux Valgus Surgery: Correction of bunion deformity in the big toe.
  • Other Hand and Foot Deformity Surgeries: Correction of deformities in the hand or foot.

  • Discectomy: Removal of the disc (intervertebral cushion) in the treatment of lumbar or cervical herniation.
  • Laminoplasty: Enlargement of the spinal canal in cases of spinal stenosis.
  • Vertebroplasty/Kyphoplasty: Treatment of spinal fractures.
  • Fusion Surgery: Fixation of vertebrae to each other (for example, in the treatment of scoliosis or spondylolisthesis).

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction
  • Meniscus Repair/Resection
  • Rotator Cuff Repair
  • Shoulder Dislocation Stabilization

  • Removal of bone and soft tissue tumors.

  • Treatment of bone infections.
  • Treatment of joint degeneration (osteoarthritis) — in earlier stages, bone-cutting surgeries (osteotomy) rather than joint replacement.
  • Tendon transfers and tendon repairs.
