Diseases of the Head and Neck Region

An ear, nose, and throat (ENT) doctor also deals with diseases of the head and neck region along with the ear, nose, and throat.

Thyroid Diseases: The thyroid gland is located in the front part of the neck and produces hormones. Conditions such as thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer are issues that ENT specialists may evaluate (thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy).
Salivary Gland Diseases: Inflammation or tumors can occur in the salivary glands. These glands include the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. Inflammation of these glands is called sialadenitis. Salivary gland surgery is a treatment option for these conditions.

Our Diagnostic Methods

Physical Examination (Ear, Nose, Throat): Our ENT specialists perform a detailed physical examination. This exam is the first and most important step in diagnosing many diseases.
Endoscopy: The visualization of areas such as the nose (nasal endoscopy), larynx (laryngoscopy), and ear (otoscopy) using special camera-equipped devices.
Otoscopy: Examination of the eardrum and external ear canal using a specialized instrument.
Tympanometry: A test measuring the pressure in the middle ear and the mobility of the eardrum.
Audiometry: Pure-tone and speech tests performed to determine hearing thresholds (hearing tests include pure-tone audiometry and speech audiometry).
Auditory Brainstem Responses (ABR): A test that evaluates hearing function by measuring the electrical activity of the auditory nerve and brainstem.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE): A test measuring the response of the outer hair cells in the inner ear (cochlea) to sound stimuli.
Vestibular Tests: Tests evaluating the function of the balance system (vestibular system), such as Electronystagmography (ENG), Videonystagmography (VNG), and caloric tests.
Smell Tests: Tests used to assess the sense of smell.
Taste Tests: Tests used to assess the sense of taste.
Allergy Tests: Two methods are used to diagnose allergic rhinitis and similar diseases: skin prick testing and blood tests. Allergy management includes immunotherapy and allergen avoidance using these methods.
Imaging Methods: X-rays, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are useful in diagnosing ENT diseases.
Biopsy and Cytological Examination: Taking samples from suspicious tissues for microscopic analysis.
Blood Tests: Can assist in diagnosing infections, allergies, and some systemic diseases.
