Obstructive Lung Diseases
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): Progressive diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema that obstruct airflow in the lungs, causing difficulty in breathing.
Asthma: A chronic lung disease characterized by recurrent episodes of shortness of breath, coughing, and wheezing due to narrowing and inflammation of the airways.
Bronchiectasis: A condition resulting from permanent widening of the airways (bronchi), leading to recurrent lung infections.
Restrictive Lung Diseases
Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD): A group of diseases affecting lung tissue and reducing lung elasticity (e.g., pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis).
Lung Infections
Pneumonia: Infection of the lung parenchyma (tissue).
Bronchitis: Inflammation of the bronchi (airways).
Tuberculosis (TB): An infectious lung disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Cystic Fibrosis: A genetic disease that causes mucus accumulation in the lungs and other organs.
Pulmonary Circulation Diseases
Pulmonary Embolism: Blockage of one of the lung arteries by a blood clot or other substance.
Pulmonary Hypertension: Elevated blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries.
Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS): Repeated cessation or shallow breathing during sleep.
Other Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders
Chest Wall and Pleura Diseases
Pleural Diseases: Inflammation of the membrane surrounding the lungs (pleura) such as pleuritis or fluid accumulation in the pleural space (pleural effusion).
Chest Wall Deformities
Lung Cancer
Malignant tumors originating in lung tissue.
Pulmonologists perform a variety of diagnostic procedures to diagnose diseases affecting the respiratory system. These procedures vary depending on the patient's complaints, physical examination findings, and the doctor's assessment.
The most commonly used diagnostic procedures by pulmonologists are as follows:
Patient History and Physical Examination
Anamnesis (Taking the History): The doctor inquires in detail about the patient's complaints (cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, etc.), when these symptoms started, what triggers them, what alleviates them, accompanying symptoms, and the patient's medical history.
Physical Examination:
Inspection: The shape, symmetry, respiratory movements, and any abnormalities of the chest are observed.
Palpation: The chest is examined by touch to check for masses, tenderness, or abnormal sounds.
Percussion: The chest is tapped, and the resulting sounds are used to assess lung air content and whether there is fluid in the pleural space.
Auscultation: The doctor listens to lung sounds with a stethoscope to evaluate abnormal sounds, such as wheezing or crackles.
Respiratory Function Tests
Spirometry: This is the most commonly used test. It measures how much air the lungs can inhale and exhale, and how quickly. It is important for diagnosing and monitoring obstructive lung diseases such as asthma and COPD.
Lung Volumes: Different lung capacities and volumes are measured (e.g., vital capacity, residual volume).
Diffusion Capacity (DLCO): This test measures the transfer of oxygen from the lungs to the bloodstream. It is an important test for interstitial lung diseases (ILD).
Bronchodilator Reversibility Test: Used in asthma diagnosis to evaluate how much of the airway narrowing is reversible.
Imaging Techniques
Chest X-ray: This is the most commonly used method. It provides a general view of the lungs, heart, and other chest organs. It helps diagnose many conditions, such as pneumonia, pneumothorax (collapsed lung), and lung cancer.
Computed Tomography (CT): Used to obtain more detailed cross-sectional images of the lungs and chest organs. It is preferred in cases of lung nodules, ILD, and lung cancer.
Pulmonary Angiography: Used to visualize lung blood vessels and is an important test for suspected pulmonary embolism (lung blood clot).
Endoscopic Techniques
Bronchoscopy: A procedure used to view the interior of the bronchi (airways), take mucus samples, or perform a biopsy. It can be applied in cases of lung cancer, infections, foreign body aspiration, and more.
Other Diagnostic Procedures
Pleural Fluid Aspiration and Analysis (Thoracentesis): In cases of pleural effusion (fluid accumulation between the lungs and pleura), the fluid is removed and analyzed.
Lung Biopsy: A small sample of lung tissue is taken and examined under a microscope. This may be necessary in cases of lung cancer or ILD.
Sleep Test (Polysomnography): Used to diagnose sleep-related respiratory disorders such as sleep apnea by recording parameters such as respiratory patterns, heart rate, and brain waves during sleep.
Sputum Examination: The sputum is examined for bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms. This test is used for diagnosing infections such as tuberculosis and bronchitis.
Allergy Tests: Used in the diagnosis of allergic respiratory diseases such as allergic asthma and allergic rhinitis.
